Legally changing your name
People may want to change their name for a variety of reasons. Here at Sheppersons Solicitors we can help you to do this quickly and easily and at a reasonable cost.
Anyone over the age of 18 can legally change their name for any reason, as long as their intent is not to defraud or deceive another person.
Common reasons that people choose to change their name:
- They don’t like their current name
- Following a divorce or separation
- To have the same surname as their child
We can help you to legally change your name by use of a legal document known as a ‘Change of name deed’. One of our solicitors can prepare this document on your behalf, and once it is properly signed and witnessed it can be used as evidence of a change of name.
If you wish to change a child’s name, this may also be arranged but it is a more complex process as it requires the consent of all parties who have parental responsibility for the child to agree or a court order.
